I-84 WATERBURY CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Wrecker Service Being Assigned to I-84 Waterbury Reconstruction Project
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that a wrecker service is being assigned to the I-84 Waterbury Reconstruction Project. The service will provide for the towing of disabled vehicles within the project limits to minimize traffic congestion on the highway.
The wreckers will be stationed at both ends of the project limits which are between Washington Street (vicinity of Exit 23) and Pierpont Road (vicinity of Exit 25A) Monday through Friday, from the hours of 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM – 7:00 PM,  with one wrecker stationed on Saturday between the hours of 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM.

Vehicles disabled by mechanical failure or crashes will be towed, at no charge, to a designated safety area. Once the affected vehicle has been transported to the designated safety area, the motorist may then contact a service of their choosing or request a service from the State Police towing list.

This service will not transport the affected vehicle beyond the designated safety area and additional arrangements are the responsibility of the motorist.
CTDOT’s Connecticut Highway Assistance Motorist Patrol (CHAMP) will also be operational in this area each weekday between 5:30 A.M. through 7:00 P.M. CHAMP provides motorist assistance such as changing flat tires, jump starting, pushing vehicles to shoulders, providing fuel and offering shelter.

"The reconstruction of I-84 in Waterbury will benefit hundreds of thousands of commuters and travelers every day once finished," said Project Engineer Chris Zukowski.  "Until this major project is completed, it is our job to ensure that we do everything possible to minimize the negative impacts of the construction work on the motoring public.  This wrecker service is one of the tools we will have on standby to help clear incidents quickly on the highway, thereby mitigating congestion and keeping traffic moving as efficiently as possible."
Motorist Reminder
To help facilitate smooth traffic operations in the project area, the CTDOT issues the following reminder to motorists, per Connecticut General Statutes, Section 14-224: Each person operating a motor vehicle who is knowingly involved in an accident on a limited access highway which causes damage to property only shall immediately move or cause his motor vehicle to be moved from the traveled portion of the highway to an untraveled area which is adjacent to the accident site if it is possible to move the motor vehicle without risk of further damage to property or injury to any person.
