MOTORIST ADVISORY

Interstate 84 Westbound To Be Closed At New York / Connecticut Border

September 21 and 22 For Bridge Replacement Project

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that Interstate 84 westbound will be CLOSED at the Connecticut-New York border from 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 21, through the afternoon of Sunday, September 22, 2013, for a bridge project. The westbound closure is expected to significantly impact streets in the city of Danbury, especially near Exits 2 and 1.  Motorists are cautioned that extensive delays may occur along I-84 and the detour roadways that include Route 6.

Roadwork is being conducted by the New York State Department of Transportation to replace the two Putnam County bridges that carry I-84 over Dingle Ridge Road in Southeast, N.Y. The bridges are located approximately one mile west of the New York/Connecticut border. The work is being accelerated to minimize traffic impacts, but will require the interstate to be closed in that area during two weekends this fall. Visit New York DOT Project website at https://www.dot.ny.gov/nyi84ct for information on the project, detour routes and contact information for media inquiries, and general questions about activity.

Connecticut and New York have been working together on the traffic management details for the upcoming closures, and include state and local law enforcement from both states

CLOSURE INFO

I-84 westbound full closure is scheduled to occur, Saturday September 21, weather permitting, at 5 p.m. and will be in effect through Sunday, September 22, 2013.  However, the contractor will begin setting up patterns on detour routes and closing some of the interstate lanes as early as 3:30 p.m.

I-84 will be channeled into a single lane and required to egress at Exit 1 onto Saw Mill Road, where they will be directed onto Route 6 for travel toward the closest I-84 Expressway interchange in Southeast, N.Y. Route 6 will also be reduced to a single lane in each direction to control the flow of traffic.

On one of the following weekends, either September 28 and 29 or October 5 and 6, I-84 eastbound will be closed at Exit 20 in Southeast, N.Y.  Traffic will be detoured onto Route 6 in NY and returned to I-84 at Exit 1 in Danbury, CT.

Depending on the origin of your trip and your final destination it may be appropriate to avoid using Interstate 84 altogether. Travelers with origins north of the work may choose I-90 for their east-west travel. Those travelers with origins south of the work may choose I-95/I-287.
