Public Information Meeting Concerning Parking Expansion at the Old Saybrook Shore Line East Railroad Station off North Main Street
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a public information meeting concerning parking expansion at the Old Saybrook Shore Line East Railroad Station off North Main Street on Wednesday, October 16, 2013, at 7:00 p.m. at the Old Saybrook Middle School Auditorium, 60 Sheffield Street in Old Saybrook. A presentation on the project will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by an informal question and answer session.
The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project.
The proposed project consists of constructing a new 200 space commuter parking lot on 3.6 acres of vacant land abutting the railroad property on the south side of the tracks. The lot will include handicapped accessible spaces, lighting, dedicated pedestrian paths and drainage along with a queuing area for regional transit vehicles. A fence will be provided along the lot perimeter to delineate private property to the south and railroad property to the north. When complete, the parking lot will help alleviate a long standing shortage of parking for commuters of the Shore Line East system.
Provisions for bike parking and landscaping, including low maintenance native species have been included in the project to enhance the site.
Based on preliminary determinations of the Office of the State Traffic Administration, it appears that no changes will be needed to any of the area intersections with US Route 1 at this time.
All work will be performed while the station and existing parking is still in operation.
Construction is anticipated to begin in the second half of 2014.
Deaf and hearing impaired persons wishing to attend this meeting and requiring an interpreter, must make arrangements by contacting the Department’s Office of Communications at (860) 594-3062 (voice only) at least five working days prior to the meeting.
Plans of the proposed project will be on display for public review. Department personnel will be available during the meeting to discuss this project. More detailed information is available at the Department’s Office of Engineering, 2800 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, Connecticut, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., excluding holidays. Anyone wishing to discuss the project may contact Mr. Keith A. Hall at (860) 594-3301 or by e-mail at keith.a.hall@ct.gov. A copy of the site plan is also available for review at the Old Saybrook Town Hall.
