Vehicular Traffic to Change to Roundabout Configuration at Salem Four Corners Routes 82 & 85 in the Town of Salem the Week of August 6, 2012
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the project for the construction of the roundabout at Salem Four Corners Routes 82 & 85 in the Town of Salem will establish the roundabout configuration for vehicular traffic at the intersection the week of August 6, 2012.
The existing traffic signals will be removed and safety devices (construction signs, traffic drums) will be positioned to guide traffic through the roundabout. Vehicular traffic approaching the roundabout is required to yield to traffic in the roundabout.  Traffic in the roundabout has the right of way.  Local access to area businesses will continue to be maintained.
Additionally, the paving of roadways is anticipated to commence the week of August 13, 2012.
The project is designed to improve safety at the intersection of Routes 82 & 85.  The location has a high-frequency history of motor vehicle accidents.  With the construction of the roundabout, a reduction in the number of accidents is anticipated, as well as an overall safety improvement at the intersection.
The contract was awarded to Tilcon Connecticut, Inc. of New Britain, Connecticut at a cost of $3,528,020.11 on March 7, 2012 and is expected to be substantially completed in November 2012.
Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit and to utilize caution through this and all other construction work zones.
