Bridge Rehabilitation Project for Interstate 84 Eastbound and Westbound over Center Street in Newtown
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that a project to rehabilitate Bridge Nos. 04255 and 04256 that carry Interstate 84 over Center Street in Newtown has been awarded and will begin construction the week of November 12, 2012.
The project involves the rehabilitation of Bridge Nos. 04255 and 04256 which carry Interstate 84(1-84) over Center Street, a local road in the town of Newtown.  The structures are single-span multi-beam-type structures. Bridge No. 04255, built in 1978 carries two lanes of Interstate 84 eastbound traffic. Bridge No. 04256, built in 1977, carries two lanes of westbound traffic. The two bridges are parallel structures, set approximately 90 feet apart and are situated 0.17 miles west of the Housatonic River.
The rehabilitation shall consist of the replacement of the existing superstructures utilizing stage construction while maintaining two lanes of 1-84 traffic in each direction at all times. In order to accomplish this, Bridge No. 04255 will require widening in the median area.  There will be mobilization, clearing and grubbing and utility relocation along Center Street beginning November 12, 202.  Work on the structures which will impact I-84 is not scheduled to begin until April 2013.
DOT Project no. 0096-0194/195 was awarded to Manafort Brothers, Inc. at a cost of $5,919,944.30 on August 17, 2012 and is scheduled to be completed April 5, 2015.
LANE CLOSURE INFO
There will be no impact on I-84 travel lanes until the stage traffic shift is implemented in April 2013.  Local traffic on Center Street will experience temporary delays beginning the week of November 12, 2012.
