Rehabilitation of bridges over Stony Brook and Quanaduck Cove on Route 1 in the Town of Stonington to Begin August 12, 2011
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the project for the rehabilitation of Bridges No. 1898, Route 1 over Stony Brook and Bridge No. 1900, Route 1 over Quanaduck Cove, in the Town of Stonington will begin August 12, 2011.

The project consists of the replacement of the existing bridges (box culverts) and associated roadwork at the approach areas to the bridges.  Both box culverts will be replaced with a new bridge which includes steel piles, concrete substructure, steel beams, and a poured concrete deck.  Road work includes full width bituminous overlay on both sides of the bridges, and the installation of metal beam railing.

The contract was awarded to Hemlock Construction Company, Inc. of Torrington, Connecticut at a cost of $3,167,032.76 on July 15, 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by May 23, 2013.

One lane of traffic must be maintained in each direction on Route 1 between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Alternating one way traffic is allowed and expected the day after Labor Day until the Thursday before Memorial Day.  Alternating one way traffic will be maintained at each bridge using stop signs at the approaches to the bridges.  Concrete barrier will be used to safely guide motorists through the work zones.

Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit and to proceed with caution through this and all other construction work zones.
