Project To Begin for the Replacement of Bridges on Route 1 at Stony Brook and Quanaduck Cove in the Town of Stonington

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that alternating one-way traffic will begin on September 12, 2011 for the replacement of Bridge Nos. 1898 and 1900 carrying Route 1 over Stony Brook and Quanaduck Cove in the Town of Stonington.

The project consists of the replacement of Bridge No. 1898, Route 1 over Stony Brook, and Bridge No. 1900, Route 1 over Quanaduck Cove.  The existing bridges are box culverts and there is also associated roadwork at the approach areas to the bridges.  Both box culverts will be replaced and the work includes steel piles, concrete substructure, steel beams, and a poured concrete deck.  Road work includes full width bituminous overlay on both sides of the bridges, and the installation of metal beam railing.

Alternating one way traffic will be maintained at each bridge using stop signs at the approaches to the bridges.  Concrete barrier will be used to safely guide motorists through the work zones. Alternating one way traffic is expected to remain in place until the Thursday before Memorial Day in May 2012.

Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit and to proceed with caution through this and all other construction work zones.

DOT Project Nos. 0137-143 & 0137-144 was awarded to Hemlock Construction Company, Inc. of Torrington, Connecticut at a cost of $3,167,032.76 on July 15, 2011 and is scheduled to be completed by May 23, 2013.
