Project Design Underway for Reconstruction of Collapsed Retaining Wall Located Along Route 32 at the Intersection With Route 163 in the Uncasville section of Montville
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that a project is currently in the design phase for the reconstruction of a retaining wall that has recently collapsed along Route 32 at the intersection with Route 163 in the Uncasville section of Montville.  The current schedule indicates that the project will be ready for advertising in June 2011.
During a routine inspection in 2010, the retaining wall was found to be leaning and a project was initiated to begin the funding and design process.  Temporary concrete barrier has been installed as an interim measure to direct motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists away from the wall.
As a result of the heavy rains over the weekend of April 16 – 17, 2011 a section of the wall has collapsed.  A survey of the field conditions indicates that the remaining portions of the wall and roadway are stable and there is no risk to the traveling public.  The site will be continued to be monitored and additional remedial action will be completed if needed until such time as a contract for the project is awarded.
The project will consist of reconstructing the retaining wall with like materials and shape.
The proposed schedule indicates a bid opening in mid-July with award in mid-August allowing adequate time to complete work within this construction season.
