Temporary Sidewalk Closures on Route 1 Darien at Metro-North RR Bridge To Begin On or About Wednesday, July 21, 2010

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the sidewalks under the Metro-North Railroad Bridge, on Route 1 in Darien will be temporarily closed on an alternating basis to continue construction of the existing railroad bridge beginning on or about Wednesday, July 21, 2010.

Temporary East Sidewalk Closure

When the East Sidewalk (Tokeneke Road Side) is temporarily closed, the West Sidewalk (West Avenue- Station Side) under the bridge will be open for pedestrian access.  Pedestrians walking north on the east sidewalk of Route 1 must cross Route 1 using the crosswalk located at Center Street to pass underneath the Railroad Bridge.  Pedestrians walking south on the east sidewalk of Route 1 must cross Route 1 using the crosswalk located at West Avenue to pass underneath the Railroad Bridge.

Temporary West Sidewalk Closure

When the West Sidewalk (West Avenue Side) is temporarily closed, the East Sidewalk (Tokeneke Road Side) under the bridge will be open for pedestrian access.  Pedestrians walking north on the west sidewalk of Route 1 must cross Route 1 using the crosswalk located at Center Street to pass underneath the Railroad Bridge.  Pedestrians walking south on the west sidewalk of Route 1 must cross Route 1 using the crosswalk located at West Avenue to pass underneath the Railroad Bridge.

Pedestrians are not permitted to walk in the roadway underneath the Railroad Bridge.  During this time, commuters will be permitted to access the railroad facilities and residences, but no pedestrian traffic will be allowed to use the east sidewalk below the bridge.  Commuters will need to follow the posted detour signs during this time.

Please allow for extra time to reach the train station and board your train.  The Connecticut Department of Transportation understands the inconvenience of these closures and will complete this work as quickly as possible.

This work is part of an ongoing project to replace bridges and catenary on the Metro-North New Haven Line between South Norwalk and Stamford.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation appreciates your patience as improvements and upgrades occur on the New Haven Rail Line.  These projects support the State’s continued effort to meet future needs on your public transportation system.
