Route 216 Bridge Repairs in the Town of North Stonington
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of work for repairs to Bridge No. 01555 which carries Route 216 over Green Falls River in the town of North Stonington as a result of heavy rains and flooding.
The bridge is located on Clarks Falls Road (Rte. 216) south of the Dennison Hill Road and East Clarks Fall Road intersection.  Alternating one-way traffic will be in effect during the initial construction and at a later time traffic will be diverted around the project site using Route 49 (Pendleton Hill Road) and Route 184 (Providence-New London Turnpike).  Advance notice of the road closure will be provided.
The design and repairs to the structure are being accelerated to address damage caused by the heavy rains and subsequent flooding experienced during the rain event in March. The repairs include the placement of grout bags under the bridge’s twin box culvert and wing wall to address undermining.  Another wing wall which was displaced during the flooding will be replaced with a new precast concrete unit.  The roadway embankment which was eroded during the rain event will also be re-established.
DOT Project No. 0170-3017 was awarded to Baier Construction Company, Inc. of Bloomfield, Connecticut on April 20, 2010 and is scheduled to be completed in September 2010.  The repairs are estimated to cost $250,000.00.
Motorists are urged to obey the posted speed limit and proceed with caution through this and all other construction work zones.
