The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will begin construction work at Union and State Street Stations in New Haven starting Monday, May 10, 2010.  The work will include many aesthetic and customer service improvements to enhance public access, public information, and safety at both stations.

The project includes upgrades to the electrical, sprinkler and fire protection systems, improvements to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems as well as rehabilitation of the two elevators at Union Station.  Other significant elements of the work will be the reconstruction of the pedestrian tunnel at Union Station, and upgrades to the public address and visual messaging systems at both stations.

“We’re very excited to be starting these important train station projects,” said James P. Redeker, CTDOT Bureau Chief of Public Transportation.  “The improvements will ensure the Department’s ability to meet our rail customers’ needs and expectations well into the future.”

Construction at Union Station will include removal of masonry walls, partitions, and flooring which will limit customer access. Work will be confined to off-peak hours, primarily from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. with the major portion of the work being performed from midnight to 4 a.m.  Signage will be displayed to direct and guide customers. Construction is scheduled to take place over the next year with a target completion date of May 2011.

In order to facilitate rehabilitation of the underground pedestrian tunnel at Union Station, customers will be restricted to one side of the tunnel for accessing the elevators and stairs to the train platforms.  During the holidays – beginning the week of Thanksgiving and ending after the New Year - construction work will be suspended and access to both sides of the underground tunnel will be opened to provide total access during these peak travel periods. 

“We appreciate your patience during this time, and remind train customers to allow extra time to access platforms - especially at Union Station,” said Eugene J. Colonese, CTDOT Rail Administrator.  “Signs will guide our customers through the work areas.”
