Foundation Project Awarded for Moses Wheeler Bridge, I-95 over the Housatonic River in Stratford and Milford
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing the start of the first phase of work for the replacement of the Moses Wheeler Bridge that carries I-95 over the Housatonic River
The replacement of the Moses Wheeler Bridge is being completed in two phases: one phase for the construction of the foundations and the second phase for the construction of the new bridge and approaches.
The foundation project also includes storm and sanitary sewer installation, private utility relocation work, construction of a waste stockpile area, and other construction work on U.S. Route 1 north and south, East Main Street and Naugatuck Avenue.  No work on I-95 or on the existing Moses Wheeler Bridge is included in this project.
Construction work zones, waste stockpile area and trestles in the Housatonic River that are constructed under this project will remain in place for use on the future Project No. 138-221.
The contract was awarded to O&G Industries, Inc. of Torrington, Ct on July 30, 2009 with an official start date of September 13, 2009 and an anticipated completion date of September 12, 2011.
The second phase of work for the replacement of the bridge will not begin until the foundation project is completed.
Special Advisory
The State Boat Launch Facility in Milford that was closed October 1, 2007 will no longer be accessible to pedestrian or vehicle traffic effective immediately.  This area is restricted to construction personnel only.
