Corrective Work on State Project Nos. 151-274/294

Waterbury, CT- The Department of Transportation today announced the award of the I-84 corrective work project in Waterbury and Cheshire (151-309) to Empire Paving of North Haven. The project limits are Marion Road in Cheshire to Pierpont Road in Waterbury. The formal “notice to proceed” is dated today (July 9, 2007).

With a bid of $19.36 million, Empire was the lowest of three bidders for the project.

Empire Paving will be mobilizing and beginning general operations this week and over the next three weeks. Work on drainage systems in the median will commence around the first week of August, with Jersey Barrier curbing utilized to protect the site and workers. For that stage of the work, the high-speed lanes will be closed to traffic in both directions.

Traffic Operations will be as follows:

Existing traffic will be maintained between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., and 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  Traffic may encounter single lane and shoulder closures between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm and additional lane reductions between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am. Along the 3.5-mile section of I-84, where there are now four travel lanes, there will be three during this work; where there are now three travel lanes, there will be two.

Construction signs and State and Local Police will assist with traffic control.

Motorists are reminded to reduce their speed through the work zones.
