Intelligent Transportation Systems

According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) means “Electronics, communications, or information processing used singly or in combination to improve the efficiency or safety of a surface transportation system."

ITS equipment components, communications technology, and software applications are useful tools for making timing adjustments to the traffic signal system. Some of the latest ITS components are:

  • Advanced Traffic Signal Controller
  • Video and Radar Detection
  • Wireless, Ethernet, and Fiber Optic Telecommunications
  • Arterial Pan-Tilt-Zoom Cameras
  • Central Traffic Signal System Control Software
  • Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPM), Adaptive Signal Control Technology (ASCT)
  • Connected Vehicle to Infrastructure (C2I)

The ITS technology for traffic signal systems provides continuous real time traffic data information to engineers and technicians. This leads to improved timing for all roadway users on State Roads.
