State Police Complete Shooting Investigation

On 5-28-11 the New London Police Department received a 911 call from a male, later identified as Kevin J. Kenny of 1110 Ocean Avenue, New London, Ct.  Mr. Kenney reported that a woman had been shot outside his apartment and provided police with a description of the suspect that in fact was a description of himself.

Officers John Michaud, Timothy Henderson, Joshua Bergesen, Justin Clachrie and Frank Callender all responded to the 1110 Ocean Avenue address arriving simultaneously.

Upon arrival they were confronted by the caller Kevin Kenney who then told the officers that he was the person they were looking for. The officers immediately ordered Kevin Kenny to show his hands at which time Kevin Kenny displayed a handgun and pointed it directly at the officers. The officers, believing that Kevin Kenny was about to shoot them, discharged their firearms striking and wounding Kevin Kenny. Kevin Kenny was taken to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital where he was treated and recovered from his wounds.

The New London County State’s Attorney requested the Connecticut State Police- Eastern District Major Crime Squad conduct  an investigation into the use of deadly force by members of the New London Police Department.  As part of the investigation Kevin Kenny was interviewed and admitted he had been depressed recently, so he fabricated the entire scenario in an effort to have the police shoot and kill him.

Upon completion of the investigation, State Police Major Crime Detectives forwarded the entire case to New London County State’s Attorney Michael L. Regan for review. State’s Attorney Michael L. Regan, after reviewing the report, concluded that the New London Police Officers reasonably believed that the use of deadly physical force was necessary to defend themselves from the imminent use of deadly force by Mr. Kenny. The use of deadly force was, therefore, appropriate.

This Investigation is closed.
