                    STATE POLICE INVESTIGATE JEWETT CITY SHOOTING

Today 08/28/08 at 9:13 a.m. Connecticut State Troopers responded to a report of a possible shooting incident at a private home located at 17 Green Ave Jewett City, CT.

State Police Troopers from Troop-E, and the Jewett City Resident State Trooper responded.  EMS personnel were on  scene treating a small child who was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. The child who was reported to be in extremely serious condition received emergency care at the scene.  The child was then transported by ground ambulance to Backus Hospital in Norwich.

State Po lice secured the shooting scene as a crime scene. The State Police Eastern Districtct Major Crime Squad Detectives were assigned to respond to this scene to initiate a criminal investigation into this incident.

Preliminary information obtained by State Police determined that the child, who is two years old, was home with both of his parents at the time of this shooting incident. The child was able to access a weapon that was in the house when it discharged wounding the child.

Subsequently at approximately 11 a.m. the victim died while being treated for a gunshot wound. 

The victim is-

Wyatt Matteau, age 2  d.o.b. 01 03 06

17B Green Ave, Jewett City   CT

A post mortem examination will be conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical to determine the exact manner and cause of death.  

State Police Detectives will investigate this incident to determine answers to all of the questions regarding exactly what took place today at this residence. 

The case remains under investigation.
