What is COVID-19?

COVID-19 is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. It is spread mainly from person to person, particularly through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Symptoms can range from mild (or no symptoms) to severe illness.

 

DEMHS Role in COVID-19

During the COVID-19 operation, the State of Connecticut Emergency Operations Center was activated on March 9, 2020. DEMHS/DESSP has been monitoring COVID-19 since January 27th, 2020 and DEMHS as the lead state agency for consequence management coordination and state response, coordinated with state agencies on Medical Surge planning, preparation and response to the pandemic.

 

DEMHS monitored, collected information, and distributed information to state agencies and partners in consultation with subject matter experts, coordinated Governor's Unified Command meetings, Statewide Conference calls as necessary, & supported press briefings for the Governor's  office. DEMHS is the lead state agency for coordinating assistance to local municipalities and State agencies with resource support as appropriate and continues to support and coordinate long-term recovery efforts of the State including continuing to support COVID-19 testing efforts of the State and the mass vaccination efforts of the State.
