Facility maximum storage capacity: 1,022,000 gallons

The facility consists of: a paved access road; a scale; various sized roll-off containers; fully-enclosed receiving/mixing tank combination with two (2) food waste storage chambers [27,000-gallon (gal.) and 45,000-gal.] for homogenization of SSOM; a two-bed carbon adsorption system to treat odors from the receiving tanks; a 9,600 square feet building equipped with odor control and housing a hammer type depackager feeding into a below-grade 75,000-gal. slurry holding tank; a 27,000-gal. agricultural waste and agricultural wastewater collection chamber; an enclosed mesophilic 950,000-gal. anaerobic digester for production of biogas and residual digestate; a 580-kilowatt [136 cubic feet per minute (cfm) biogas generation at 60% methane] combined heat and power engine/generator set for electricity generation; a backup flare with maximum 180 cfm blower to relieve overpressure of biogas and minimize potential for emergency releases; a packed-bed scrubber with iron oxide-impregnated wood chips (“iron sponge”) to reduce hydrogen sulfide concentrations in the biogas; and a 5.5-million gallon lagoon for the storage of digestate prior to use.

The facility is located on a 5.6-acre site within a 72-acre parcel of land. The proposed activity is located within the watershed of Skungamaug River.

The following waste materials may be accepted at the facility: (a) Source Separated Organic Material limited to Fats, Oils and Greases, packaged and unpackaged food waste and (b) Agricultural Waste and Agricultural Wastewaters from the existing, neighboring Hytone Farm.
