Emergency Burn Ban In Effect 10/26/24 - An emergency burn ban is now in effect for all Connecticut State Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Management areas, prohibiting the use of all outdoor grills, firepits, and campfires, and the kindling and use of flame outdoors. DEEP and local agencies are working to contain several active fires across the state. Please avoid all affected State Parks and Forests, as well as the blue-blazed Mattabesett Trail. The Enduro Trail in Voluntown and portions of North Stonington within the Pachaug State Forest are closed at this time. Please note that today's forest fire danger report remains at a 'very high' or 'extreme' level. District Fire Wardens

Per CGS 23-37 District Fire Wardens are appointed by the State Forest Fire Warden (DEEP Commissioner), for a term of 2 years to assist in prevention and extinguishment of forest fires.

The District Fire Warden acts as a liaison between local fire departments and the State of Connecticut DEEP- Forest Protection- Forest Fire Control Officers. Communication links between fire departments and Fire Control Officers can include:

  • Any Fire Department needs (training requests, coordinating Smokey Bear and/or hose exchange).
  • Assisting in ensuring fire departments receive program information (i.e. Newsletter).
  • Assisting in gathering data for entry into Wildland Fire Reporting App (if needed).
  • Attending any district meetings, trainings, or other fire department functions where Forest Fire Control Officer is requested but unable to attend.

The District Fire Warden also compiles fire bills for fire departments on wildfire incidents and sends them to the Forest Fire Control Officer.

Billing

Eligible Fire Departments are entitled to submit a fire bill utilizing the Wildfire Reimbursement Form to the State of Connecticut through their District Fire Warden. It is the department's responsibility to fill out and submit. Billings for vehicles utilized in suppression efforts will be accepted; vehicles only used for transportation will be excluded.
