State Museum Sundays

Sundays: 1/19/25, 2/16/25, & 3/16/25. 

Tours: 11:30 am & 1:30 pm

Each third Sunday of the month the museum is open by timed guided tours with FREE admission for Connecticut residents (with proof of residence) on the third Sunday of each month, November through March. Non-CT residents are welcome to attend a tour, but general admission rates will apply. No reservations will be made or accepted for the two tours offered on State Museum Sundays. Tour spaces are available by walk-in only, first come, first served.

Schooling the Nation: The Success of the Canterbury Academy for Black Women (2025) University of Illinois Press.

 

Join Dr. Jennifer Rycenga and museum staff for conversation, book sales & signing, light refreshments, access to the museum exhibit (Canterbury Female Boarding School: Courage, Conscience, & Continuance), and a short talk by Rycenga about the school and its place in a truly multi-racial and multi-gender understanding of America.

 

The event is FREE, but pre-registration is recommended because space is limited. Registration options include free registration or registration with a paid book pre-order option.   Register here.

 

Free registraction to the event does not include book purchase. Books can be purchased on-site the day of the event. Books will be available for pick-up at the Prudence Crandall Museum the day of the event or afterwards.  Please note that if you are unable to attend the event to have your book signed the museum will not be able to provide special book dedications beyond Dr. Rycenga's signature. Contact crandall.museum@ct.gov to arrange for pick-up after the event. The museum is unable to ship books at this time.

 

 

Old Home Day

11 am to 4 pm

The Prudence Crandall Museum will be open with free admission for self-guided tours during the Canterbury Historical Society’s annual Canterbury Old Home Day event.  All ages are encouraged to participate in a Kindness Stones painting activity—visitors can leave their created Kindness Stones in the Peace Garden, or take them to share with others.

*NOTE: Parking will be at the Helen Baldwin Middle School on Rte. 14. A shuttle to the Canterbury Green will be provided. The museum is across from the Canterbury Green.

 

National Cat Day

Last day museum is open for the season

Free admission to the Prudence Crandall Museum with donation of unopened cat food (wet or dry, any brand/any flavor), brand-new cat toys and supplies (not accepting litter-related items at this time), or paper towels and garbage bags.  All items will be donated to the Paws Cat Shelter, a no-kill shelter in Putnam, CT.  In recognition of violence perpetuated against women, children, and animals, the museum honors National Cat Day by collecting food and supplies to keep our feline friends safe.
