State Museum Sundays

Sundays: 12/15/24, 1/19/25, 2/16/25, & 3/16/25. 

Tours: 11:30 am & 1:30 pm

Each third Sunday of the month the museum is open by timed guided tours with FREE admission for Connecticut residents (with proof of residence) on the third Sunday of each month, November through March. Non-CT residents are welcome to attend a tour, but general admission rates will apply. No reservations will be made or accepted for the two tours offered on State Museum Sundays. Tour spaces are available by walk-in only, first come, first served.

 

Exhibit: Spirit of Resilience: Art & Artifact

  

This exhibit pairs small quilts by Connecticut-based and internationally renowned fabric artist Ed Johnetta Miller with artifacts in the museum collection that directly connect to the Canterbury Female Boarding School.

 

Ed Johnetta Miller is an author, fiber artist, teacher, independent curator, founder of the Hartford Artisan Center, and former Management Envoy from the US to Cote D'Ivorie, Ivory Coast. Miller's work is exhibited widely in the US and internationally, including the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum of Art, The International Quilt Museum, Nelson Mandela's National Museum, and three US Embassies. The Sunday New York Times featured Ed Johnetta Miller in the "Best of the Best" series twice, in 2001 and 2021. Her work has been featured on HGTV, WGBH-Boston, and Modern Master's Holiday ShowMiller has received numerous awards for her role as artist, community leader, and teacher, including The Governor's Award, Connecticut's most prestigious artistic award.

 

Entry to the museum is by timed guided tours only, Sundays at 11:30 am & 1:30 pm. Admission rates apply and includes a guided tour of the semi-permanent exhibit, Canterbury Female Boarding School: Courage, Conscience, & Continuance, with access to Spirit of Resilience: Art & Artifact.

Old Home Day

11 am to 4 pm

The Prudence Crandall Museum will be open with free admission for self-guided tours during the Canterbury Historical Society’s annual Canterbury Old Home Day event.  All ages are encouraged to participate in a Kindness Stones painting activity—visitors can leave their created Kindness Stones in the Peace Garden, or take them to share with others.

*NOTE: Parking will be at the Helen Baldwin Middle School on Rte. 14. A shuttle to the Canterbury Green will be provided. The museum is across from the Canterbury Green.

 

National Cat Day

Last day museum is open for the season

Free admission to the Prudence Crandall Museum with donation of unopened cat food (wet or dry, any brand/any flavor), brand-new cat toys and supplies (not accepting litter-related items at this time), or paper towels and garbage bags.  All items will be donated to the Paws Cat Shelter, a no-kill shelter in Putnam, CT.  In recognition of violence perpetuated against women, children, and animals, the museum honors National Cat Day by collecting food and supplies to keep our feline friends safe.
