In August 2020, Connecticut was designated by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) as one of just six Defense Manufacturing Communities (DMC) in the country. This designation is an acknowledgment of the state’s long-standing leadership in the aerospace, defense, and shipbuilding industries.

Connecticut is home to three of the DoD’s largest Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) and a world-class supply chain of more than 700 highly skilled advanced manufacturers.

In September 2020, the CDMCC was awarded a $1.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to fund its initial project – The Digital Model Initiative. This two-year pilot program will help accelerate the adoption of 3-D design and manufacturing and bring Model Based Definition (MBD) technology to the region. MBD will digitally connect the region's leading OEMs with their supply chains and transform the state's supply chain from a 2-dimensional (2D) design and manufacturing platform to a 3-dimensional (3D) platform.

The program will develop capabilities in Connecticut to utilize the advantages of Model Based Definition through supplier adoption, innovation and development of the workforce. This technology represents a fundamental building block for digital transformation ensuring that defense products are developed and produced with shorter lead times, lower costs and flawless quality.

The program will include resources from the DECD, MxD, Connecticut Governor’s Workforce Council, Central Connecticut State University, CONNSTEP and Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology resulting in the creation of an industry “Playbook” that will ultimately help reduce cost, shorten lead-times, improve overall quality for the supply chain and facilitate the know-how to upskill CT's defense workforce.
