Prepaid Funeral Service Contracts

A prepaid funeral contract, also known as a "pre-need" funeral service contract, is a contract that establishes funeral funding and services before the need for the services occur (i.e. before death). Consumers may choose to enter into a pre-need contract as part of their end-of-life planning to ease the burden on their family members in the event of their death.

DCP may check pre-need contracts to see if they include anything that’s unfair or misleading under Connecticut law. The Connecticut Department of Insurance regulates the funding of funeral services via life insurance, and the Department of Public Health issues credentials for embalmers and funeral homes.

Learn more about what is required to be included in a prepaid funeral contract, where and how the funds should be stored and what funeral homes are required to do with pre-need contracts.

File a complaint

If you have an issue with a prepaid funeral service contract, first try to resolve the issue by directly contacting the funeral home or escrow agent and explaining the problem. If this doesn't work, consider filing a complaint with DCP for further help.
