SUMMER SAFETY: POOL AND INSURANCE TIPS

With summer well underway, the Connecticut Insurance Department (CID) wants to remind residents about essential insurance considerations for pool owners and those planning to install a pool.

Here are some important points to keep in mind:

  1. Ensure your pool complies with Connecticut state code by having a surrounding fence, as well as other safety measures like pool covers, since some insurance policies may require these for coverage.
  2. Ensure your homeowner's policy has sufficient personal liability coverage for pool-related injuries. Consult your agent of insurance company to determine the appropriate coverage and limits, including a personal umbrella insurance policy.
  3. Many policies exclude coverage for gradual leaks. Promptly repair any leaks to prevent water damage to your home
  4. Covered damage to in-ground pools is typically considered part of Coverage A Dwelling or Coverage B Other Structures. Covered damage to an above-ground pool is typically considered part of Coverage B Other Structures or Coverage C Personal Property.
  5. It’s important to note that a homeowner’s policy does not cover damages to your pool (either in-ground or above-ground) that result from normal wear and tear or the lack of proper maintenance.
  6. Contact your licensed insurance producer or insurance company to review your coverage and limitations under your specific insurance policy.

For any questions or further assistance, please contact the Connecticut Insurance Department by email at insurance@ct.gov or by calling 860-297-3900 or find us online.

Enjoy a safe and well-insured summer!
