Tyrone, who is legally blind, was laid off from his job in May 2020 because the hotel closed its doors. Tyrone was devastated and was eager to find another job. Tyrone contacted his VR counselor to help him find new employment since he was unemployed. Tyrone told his VR counselor that he did not want to work in a hotel again because he had a difficult time with staying focused. Tyrone and his VR counselor researched the job market and his interests and decided that dishwashing was a viable option because there is a designated work area and decreased amount of distractions. Tyrone told his VR counselor that he has never worked as a dishwasher, but he was willing to try it out. He was provided low vision and transportation services. Tyrone’s VR counselor sent a referral for placement services utilizing the Competitive Placement Opportunity, so Tyrone could try the dishwasher position. Goodwill Industries was able to find an open dishwasher position at Uberti’s Fish Market in Stratford, CT. Tyrone started in November 2019 and was hired in January 2020. Tyrone was able to maintain employment with job coaching supports. During the COVID-19 pandemic Tyrone was able to remain employed with Uberti’s because the restaurant transitioned to takeout ordering. Tyrone loves his job and his coworkers are supportive and enjoy working with him.
