Attorney General's Statement On Decision To Withdraw Ash Landfill Proposal

August 28, 2009

"The CRRA has rightly extinguished its ash landfill proposal -- heeding the public and preserving a pristine, rural environment from irreparable destruction. This decision is smart and sensitive to the public interest and environmental values. We owe citizen activists and advocates a debt of gratitude for their courage and conviction in this fight.

"Reasonably affordable waste disposal is perfectly possible without turning 500 acres of pristine land into a dumping ground for refuse ash. There are economic and technological driving forces that will make this means of disposal obsolete.

"In addition, the trash industry needs to be regulated in the public interest so consumers are spared its monopolistic stranglehold.

"I am glad that the CRRA reasonably and respectfully abandoned this ash landfill plan -- quickly recognizing overwhelming public opposition."
