Attorney General Meets With Mohegan Tribal Leaders, Calls Casino Smoking Plan "Positive Step"

January 8, 2009

"I was pleased today to meet with the Mohegan Tribal Council chairman and other tribal representatives in a very productive and worthwhile discussion. They have outlined a plan that is important and impressive.

"The plan is a very positive step forward, but its real meaning will be in further progress in the future through steps toward a total ban on smoking, which is the ultimate goal. I will submit legislation during this session addressing the need for a smoke-free environment at the casinos. It will incorporate the concept embodied in this agreement of a phased series of steps toward a smoke-free environment. Our hope is that both tribes will adopt the provisions of this plan, even without legislation.

"The Mohegan Tribal Nation has made a historic and enduring contribution to our state and even our national public health by proposing this plan. I look forward to a continuing dialogue with the Mohegan Tribal Nation and discussions with the Mashantucket Pequots."
