Attorney General Comments On Closure Of Clunkers For Cash

August 20, 2009

"A definite date heeds our call for certainty in ending the program, but this date seems very soon and sudden. Giving consumers and dealers only four days threatens chaos and confusion. This successful program merits a smooth and sound end. Rather than crashing cars for clunkers, the administration should consider a soft landing.

"Our concerns and criticisms remain important and valid and even more urgent. In the remaining days of the program, the DOT has an even greater obligation to improve the process with faster reimbursement, better recordkeeping and old vehicles available for consumer use during processing. The sudden closure and short notice may aggravate rather than alleviate the problems. In the remaining days, the DOT must do better for the sake of both consumers and dealers."
