Attorney General Announces Victory Blocking CNG/SCG Layoffs That Threaten Public Safety
November 13, 2009
"This step stops the companies from cravenly and cavalierly firing more than 70 workers essential to protecting public safety and service reliability. Even as the DPUC continues an investigation, the companies sought to circumvent the decision and hijack the legal process. Monday will mean business as usual -- no layoffs.
"These workers -- including gas technicians and dispatchers -- are the first responders to gas leaks and other serious public safety hazards. The beginning of the winter storm season -- on the eve of Thanksgiving -- makes this time the worst possible for layoffs of first responders critical to repairing gas leaks and other fuel problems.
"I applaud the DPUC for giving this decision the critical consideration that it deserved -- and recognizing our powerful concerns. This case is about more than the workers who will suffer job loss and hardships headed into the holiday season. Public safety and service reliability are paramount in preserving these jobs.
"The companies overtly overreached -- trying to beat the DPUC's investigation with fast-tracked layoffs, and making a mockery of state regulators and the legal system.
"Consumers are turning on the heat this month -- heading into another cold Connecticut winter -- and cannot afford to lose safe and reliable gas service."
