We at ADS believe that everyone should be able to improve their independence. For that reason, here are services that help bring accessibility home:

  • Home modifications (via My Place CT): Changes around your home can make it safer and more comfortable. Items such as ramps, roll-in showers, lowered counters, and lifts can help you do everyday activities more easily. Some changes are low-cost and easily made while larger changes may require a contractor.

  • Cell phone access (via My Place CT): A cell phone can perform many functions that make life easier. For older adults and people with disabilities, a cell phone can help you stay connected to important services and support.

  • Mobility and orientation for people who are blind: Rehabilitation Teaching and Orientation and Mobility staff work with the individual to maximize independent living skills. Rehabilitation Teaching focuses on instructing individuals in the use of adaptive devices, techniques, and strategies for coping with vision loss while maintaining independence in their homes and communities.

  • Assistive Technology (AT) in the home, such as low-tech items like grab bars, railings, motion detection lighting or higher-tech items like smart home technology can help a person to remain safely in their home. Learn more about what AT may be available for your home by visiting a CT Tech Act Project AT Community Partner agency or contacting the CT Tech Act Project.
