Scammers are very good at fooling people. Scammers also want to rush you. They want your money before you have time to think. Before you do anything, stop and think about it
Never give your financial or personal information to anyone you do not know, especially over the phone or internet.
  • The winning lottery ticket or prize? You do not have to pay for a prize. Ever.
  • The person who needs money for an emergency? Call that person. Call another family member.
  • The once-in-a-lifetime investment? That is not going to be offered over the phone, and you should never believe someone offering you something that requires you to act right away.
  • The company that is threatening to turn off your power? Did you pay your bills? Did you get an overdue notice in the mail? Hang up the phone and call the company directly. Ask if they called you. Ask if you missed a payment.  Utility companies and the IRS do not threaten customers over the phone.
  • If you suspect anything, just hang up.
