Reading Informational Text

Writing

Description of Unit

This Grade 9-10 unit titled “Researching to Deepen Understanding: TECHNOLOGY” from odelleducation.com  is part of the developing core proficiencies program  intended to be completed in three weeks of direct instruction in ELA/Literacy. The instruction is organized into the steps of the research process that has students initiate inquiry, deepen understanding, finalize inquiry, and develop an evidence-based perspective. The unit is scaffolded to support students’ ability to archive and organize information in order to see and analyze connections in ways that aid comprehension, deepen understanding, and prepare them to express their evolving perspective. Students create an insightful and defensible research-based perspective and its component claims as their culminating assessment.

Connecticut teachers should be aware that teacher notes and preparation materials are extensive and will require familiarity to be used effectively.

The unit is an exemplary model of a research topic repository which supports and informs teacher and student decisions that are made during the research process.  The unit plan includes a progression of learning where concepts and skills advance and deepen over time. The unit includes assessment guidelines and grade specific indicators that provide guidance for interpreting student performance.
