LT. GOVERNOR BYSIEWICZ STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF NEW JERSEY LT. GOVERNOR SHEILA OLIVER
(HARTFORD, CT) - Lieutenant Governor Susan Bysiewicz released the following statement regarding the passing of New Jersey Lieutenant Governor Sheila Oliver:
“Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver was a trailblazer and true agent of change who brought a unique and invaluable perspective to public policy discourse and served as an inspiration to women and girls everywhere.
She was committed to the people of New Jersey and through her tireless efforts was able to uplift her community. Lt. Governor Oliver’s decades of commitment to public service are seen in the progress she made with some of the most challenging issues like health benefits reform, affordable housing, homelessness prevention and much more. As New Jersey’s first Black woman to serve as Assembly Speaker and the first woman of color to serve in a statewide elected office in New Jersey history, she leaves behind a legacy of breaking barriers that will never be forgotten.
Sheilawas not only a distinguished public servant but also a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and so much more to so many people. My heart goes out to her family and loved ones during this unbearable loss.”
