LT. GOVERNOR BYSIEWICZ, LIVEGIRL, CoWaG COUNCIL MEMBERS & ELECTED OFFICIALS CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL WITH RALLY AT THE CAPITOL

(HARTFORD, CT) – Today, Lt. Governor Bysiewicz joined forces with LiveGirl, members of the Governor’s Council on Women and Girls, State Representative Robyn Porter, State Representative Kate Farrar, other elected officials and female students to celebrate International Day of the Girl at the State Capitol in Hartford.

2022 commemorates the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl (IDG). The IDG focuses attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ empowerment and the fulfillment of their human rights. The rally held at the Capitol was led by Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, She Works Interns, student advocates, CoWaG Council Members and other elected officials, with leaders discussing various topics and the importance of women empowerment and females in leadership.

Upon taking office in January 2019, one of Governor Lamont's first actions was to form the Governor's Council on Women and Girls – a group tasked with providing a coordinated state response to issues that impact the lives of women, girls, their families, and the State of Connecticut.

“As Chair on the Governor’s Council on Women and Girls, it has been my focus since taking office that we prioritize the livelihood, the needs and the futures of all of the women in our great state,” said Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz. “On the 10th anniversary of this important day, we came together with LiveGirl to showcase opportunities for girls to have their voices heard on a broader stage and remind them that the sky is the limit.”

Founded in 2014, LiveGirl, Inc. is a Connecticut-based nonprofit organization that builds confident, inclusive leaders. Their mission is to prepare the next generation of diverse, brave female leaders with the skills, community, and connections so that all girls may thrive and make a positive impact on the world.

"LiveGirl was proud to partner with the Lt. Governor's office to hold a rally on International Day of the Girl to help promote issues and challenges impacting women and girls around the world, but also specifically here in Connecticut. We were excited to hear from an amazing lineup of speakers that highlighted the work being done on behalf of women and girls, along with the call to action and the need for more work to be done,” said Veronica T. DeLandro, Executive Director of LiveGirl.

"This International Day of the Girl, we recommited to giving girls the opportunities, skills, and resources to reach their full potential. This session, I was proud to champion a law that will provide free menstrual products at school, so no one needs to choose between their education and these essential products," said State Representative Kate Farrar. "Our work in the Connecticut General Assembly should continue to build upon this and recent efforts to serve as a national and global model on how we can remove the barriers girls face to fully thrive."

"This year we celebrate the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child, and this year's theme is 'Our time is now--our rights, our future.' It truly was an honor to be a part of this on-time rally to uplift and encourage our girls, and to commit to investing in a future that believes in and supports their full potential, leadership, influence, and power,” said State Representative Robyn Porter.
