LT. GOV. BYSIEWICZ, CONGRESSMAN LARSON, SECRETARY OF THE STATE MERRILL, AND MAYOR BRONIN KICK OFF 2020 CENSUS EFFORTS IN THE CITY OF HARTFORD

Officials Highlight Critical Role of State’s Libraries in the First-ever Online Census

HARTFORD— Today, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz, Congressman John B. Larson, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, and representatives from the U.S. Census Bureau joined Hartford Mayor Luke Bronin at the Hartford Public Library to announce the start of the city’s 2020 Census efforts and to highlight the critical role libraries across Connecticut will play in the first-ever online census.

“The census is tied to $8 billion of federal funding for our state and Connecticut could stand to lose $2,200 for every person that is undercounted,” Lt. Governor Bysiewicz said. “Strategic planning will be absolutely necessary in places like Hartford, where many residents live in hard-to-count areas. Libraries will play a critical role in our efforts to ensure an accurate count by providing computer and internet access to people who do not have those resources at home and wish to complete the census online. I applaud the City of Hartford for joining the growing list of cities and towns creating local complete count committees.”

“It’s vital that Hartford stands up to be counted, and we’ll be working with state and local partners to get the word out to our entire community through a complete count committee,” said Mayor Bronin. “The census matters for everything from state and federal funding to electoral representation, and we want to make sure that everyone in Hartford gets counted. I want to thank Lieutenant Governor Bysiewicz, Congressman Larson, and our entire federal delegation for their support and leadership as this process gets underway.”

On February 4, 2019 Lt. Governor Bysiewicz launched the Connecticut Complete Count Committee (CCCC) to inform and help direct the State's efforts in the upcoming 2020 Census.

Bridget Quinn-Carey, CEO of Hartford Public Library and Kate Byroade, President of the Connecticut Library Association are both members of sate-wide and will lead committee efforts to help libraries across Connecticut prepare for the 2020 Census.

“On behalf of the Hartford Public Library, I am honored to serve on the State Complete Count Committee for the 2020 U.S. Census. Our role in the Count as an urban public library is vital as urban areas are the locations designated at Hard to Count and are critical to achieving a complete count in 2020,” said Hartford Public Library CEO Bridget Quinn-Carey. "Having an active role in the count will also help us continue our mission of democratizing access to information and opportunity for the people of the City of Hartford.”
