Governor Lamont Declares ‘Denise D’Ascenzo Day’ Thursday to Mark Legendary News Anchor’s Birthday

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont today announced that he has signed a proclamation declaring Thursday, January 30, 2020 as Denise D’Ascenzo Day in the State of Connecticut in recognition of the legendary WFSB news anchor’s birthday. D’Ascenzo passed away suddenly in December. A public memorial service is being held in her honor on Wednesday at the Connecticut Convention Center in Hartford.

“For more than thirty years, Denise D’Ascenzo entered millions of homes through her news broadcasts, becoming an extended member of each of our families,” Governor Lamont said. “On behalf of the entire state, our hearts remain with Denise’s family, friends, and colleagues at WFSB.”

WHEREAS, Denise D’Ascenzo was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Rockville, Maryland, with her parents Salvatore and Rita, and three sisters Donna, Diane, and Debbie; and

WHEREAS, in 1986 Denise moved from her news anchor position in Cleveland to work for WFSB-TV in Connecticut; and

WHEREAS, since then, Denise has been a constant reassuring voice, relaying to Connecticut residents the biggest local and national news stories of the past 33 years; and

WHEREAS, Denise has the distinction of being the longest serving anchor at a single television station in Connecticut history; and

WHEREAS, she has been recognized with two prestigious Edward R. Murrow awards, seven Associated Press awards, and a national Gabriel award, as well as being inducted into both the Silver Circle and the Connecticut Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Denise dedicated her career to serving the people of Connecticut through her journalism and she will forever be known as a Connecticut news legend; now

THEREFORE, I, Ned Lamont, Governor of the State of Connecticut, do hereby proclaim January 30, 2020 as

in the State of Connecticut.
