New Haven - Coast Guard Capt. Joseph Vojvodich turned over command of Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound to Capt. Edward J. Cubanski III in a ceremony at Sector Long Island Sound Friday, June 28.

Vojvodich has led the sector and served as Captain of the Port of Long Island Sound since June 2010. Cubanski, a Norwich native, previously served as the response division chief from 2012 to 2013 and the incident management branch chief from 2010 to 2012 for the Eighth District in New Orleans, La.

Vojvodich was promoted to the rank of rear admiral by Rear Adm. Dan Abel, the Coast Guard First District commander. He will next serve at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C., as the program executive officer and director of acquisition programs.

Sector Long Island Sound is the largest operational field command in the Coast Guard. With more than 550 active-duty personnel and civilian personnel, and 180 reservists, the Sector is charged with maritime safety, security and stewardship for the Port of Long Island Sound.

In New Orleans, Cubanski provided operational oversight to a region of 26 states and the Gulf of Mexico by leading and managing search and rescue, marine environment response, law enforcement and intelligence programs. He also commanded Air Station New Orleans from 2008 to 2012, and led the response operations to Hurricane Gustav and the rescue of crews from the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.

Cubanski is a 1988 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy. He is married to Shirley Cagle and they have two children, Zoe, 10 and Lily, 8.

Also Friday, Capt. Peter A. Mingo, a native of New London, assumed command of Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City in New Jersey from Capt. Nicholas A. Bartolotta, who has served as the commanding officer since July 2010. Mingo most recently served as the chief of incident management for the Coast Guard's 13th District in Seattle, Wash.
