Gov. Malloy and Coalition of Governors Urge President to Keep the U.S. in the Paris Climate Agreement

Governors Say Agreement Will Maintain Nation’s Competitiveness as a Global Leader in Clean Energy

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and the Governors of eleven other states today wrote to President Donald J. Trump urging him to keep the United States in the Paris Climate Agreement, explaining that it is essential to protecting the nation’s residents from the potentially catastrophic impacts of climate change.

They also maintain that the policies being implemented in support of the agreement are boosting the nation’s global competitiveness and creating jobs in the clean energy sector.

“In addition to the positive environmental impact that the Paris Climate Agreement will have, the inclusion of the United States will maintain our nation’s global leadership role in developing clean energy technology and benefiting from the high-quality jobs that come with it,” Governor Malloy said. “Putting our heads in the sand and letting other nations outpace our country in this sector is a formula for disaster, and that is exactly what will happen if we pull out of this agreement.”

The twelve Governors who signed on to the letter include:

  • Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. of California
  • Governor John Hickenlooper of Colorado
  • Governor Dannel P. Malloy of Connecticut
  • Governor John Carney of Delaware
  • Governor David Y. Ige of Hawaii
  • Governor Mark Dayton of Minnesota
  • Governor Andrew M. Cuomo of New York
  • Governor Kate Brown of Oregon
  • Governor Tom Wolf of Pennsylvania
  • Governor Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island
  • Governor Terence R. McAuliffe of Virginia
  • Governor Jay Inslee of Washington
