Meet Commissioner Victoria Chavey

Comm. Victoria ChaveyVictoria Chavey was appointed to the Commission in 2019 by Governor Ned Lamont.

Commissioner Chavey believes strongly that our democracy benefits from the community having access to information about how the government works, especially how and why decisions are made.  “Access to information helps ensure that people in our state are informed about matters that are important to them, and it also helps promote accountability and responsiveness of our public agencies”, she said.

“As a long-time litigator, I have seen the power that access to information can have in educating people about different ways of looking at an issue and helping them understand why something was done, whether or not they ultimately agree with the outcome.  My legal practice also has instilled in me a willingness to ask questions and listen patiently, with a goal of appreciating all sides of an issue, and I use that approach as a Commissioner.”

An equity principal at the law firm of Jackson Lewis, P.C., Commissioner Chavey previously was an equity partner at the law firm of Day Pitney LLP (fka Day, Berry & Howard).  Commissioner Chavey earned her law degree from Boston University School of Law, summa cum laude, where she was Editor-in-Chief of the Boston University Law Review, and her undergraduate degree, cum laude, from Dartmouth College.  She is actively involved in her community, presently serving on the boards of the Connecticut Bar Foundation and the Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
