State and Local Government Tax Exempt Income (TEI) Information

These are this year’s updated documents and forms for the annual Tax Exempt Income (TEI) data submission.

This data submission applies to all entities that issue, prepare or submit 1099 forms for individual clients who have $10 or more in federally tax exempt interest and/or dividends from bonds, mutual funds, money market funds or unit investment trusts where the individual client has a Connecticut mailing address or is known to have a CT tax filing obligation.

This submission is in addition to and is separate from the other Connecticut reporting requirements for CT-1099 forms.

This information must be submitted in an electronic format using an acceptable form of digital media. Paper records and electronic images of paper records are not allowed. Submit this data with a transmittal Form AU-409.

The technical specifications for the file layout are based upon a modified version of the IRS Publication 1220 (Rev. 9-2020).

The modifications of this file layout and the allowable submission methods are detailed in the Connecticut Department of Revenue Services (DRS) document AU-408, “Specifications for Submission of 2021 State and Local Government Tax Exempt Income (TEI) Information”.

If your organization uses an outside vendor to fulfill your tax reporting obligations you must supply your vendor with this request and must specifically instruct them to make this submission on your behalf.

The due date is January 31, 2022 however an automatic 3 month extension to April 30, 2022 is granted without any forms needing to be submitted or any formal request being made. To obtain an additional extension to June 30, 2022 complete the Common Replies form or submit a written request by mail or email.
