Replacement of Highway Signs along Route 6 and Interstate 384

The Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is developing plans to replace signs and sign supports along U.S Route 6 (freeway section only – Columbia to Windham) and the entire length of I- 384 (East Hartford to Bolton) and the associated on/off ramps.  The new signs and sign supports will be installed in accordance with the latest Federal and State standards and guidelines.  The types of signs that will be replaced include, but are not limited to, large overhead and side mounted guide signs and on-ramp entrance signs.

The existing signs have exceeded their useful service life and are in need of replacement.  The scope of the project involves the replacement of only those signs that have exceeded their useful service life, have less than adequate retroreflectivity, have evidence of damage, or are no longer in compliance with Federal and State standards and guidelines.  Excluded from this project are signs that have been recently replaced or are scheduled to be replaced by other various construction projects.

To be in conformance with Federal standards, exit numbers on I-384 are required to be revised from the existing sequential numbering to mileage-based numbering.  Additionally, mileage-based exit numbers will be added to U.S. Route 6 signs.  More information on exit renumbering can be found at the following link: Exit_Renumbering_FAQ.pdf (ct.gov)  Please refer to the list below for proposed exit numbers for U.S. Route 6 and I-384.

It is the Department’s policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.   It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project’s development. At this time, it is not anticipated that an informational meeting or formal public hearing will be necessary.

The design plans for the project are expected to be completed in the summer of 2023 with construction commencing in 2024.

Anyone interested in requesting information on this project may do so by contacting Barry Schilling, Supervising Engineer, Barry.Schilling@ct.gov .  Please make reference to Project Number 0170-5026.
