Feasibility Study of Electrifying Hartford Line and Danbury and Waterbury Branch Lines Underway

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is exploring the feasibility of electrifying the Hartford Line, the Danbury Branch Line, and the Waterbury Branch Line. This study aims to investigate the feasibility and costs associated with these three rail lines.

The scope of the study includes evaluating the constructability of the catenary and power supply infrastructure, as well as cost estimating. The study will help inform next steps for the overall statewide transportation strategy.”

“This electrification study for the Hartford Line and Waterbury and Danbury Branch Lines is part of the TIME for CT vision of having faster trains and reduced travel time. Electrifying these Lines could increase ridership and build more frequent service,” said Connecticut Department of Transportation Project Manager Jay Young. “The study results will provide us with the information necessary to determine how we move forward developing a more sustainable and accessible rail network.”

The electrification study is anticipated to be completed in the Spring of 2024.

It’s important to CTDOT to ensure the public’s feedback and thoughts are heard and included. Members of the public can submit comments and questions by emailing Project Manager Jay Young at D.Jay.Young@ct.gov. Please reference State Project No. 0330-0008PL in the email.
