Public Invited to Attend Virtual Meeting Regarding Intersection and Drainage Improvements on Route 53 in Danbury.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a Virtual Public Information Meeting concerning the proposed Intersection and Drainage Improvements on Route 53 (South Street) at Triangle Street and Coal Pit Hill Road on Tuesday, June 21 at 7:00 p.m.  The meeting will be live streamed via Microsoft Teams Live Event and YouTube Live. A question and answer (Q&A) session will immediately follow the presentation. The presentation will be recorded.  Instructions on how to access the meeting and on how to provide comments or ask questions can be found at the project webpage:  State Project No. 34-324

The purpose of the project is to improve the safety and operation of the intersection of Route 53 (South Street) at Triangle Street and Coal Pit Hill Road.  It is proposed to install exclusive left turn lanes on Route 53 at the intersection, shift Coal Pit Hill Road westerly to improve the access from Route 53 to Triangle Street and to maintain the Triangle Street approach to Route 53 as a right turn only.

The project also includes proposed improvements to the existing drainage system at the intersection and surrounding area with the installation of a drainage trunk line that would extend on Route 53 to Shelter Rock Road and Lee Mac Avenue to a new outlet at the Still River.

There are right-of-way impacts associated with the proposed improvements, including partial acquisitions and easements to accommodate the minor widening along Route 53 and the proposed drainage outlet at the Still River.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2024 based on the availability of funding, acquisition of rights-of-way and approval of permit(s).  The estimated construction cost range for this project is approximately $12 to $15 million. This project is anticipated to be undertaken with 80% Federal Funds and 20% State funds.
