I-95 Northbound Safety Improvement Project in Groton, Stonington and North Stonington

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) is announcing that the I-95 Northbound Safety Improvements construction project in Groton, Stonington and North Stonington is anticipated to begin on April 3, 2023.

Work will begin slowly and not have much impact to traffic.  The contractor will be installing liability construction signs, performing survey and pavement cores, clearing and grubbing, and installing silt fence.  All of this work will be during the daytime.  There will be right side shoulder closures.  The pavement cores will be done utilizing a moving operation for efficiency.  Nightwork is anticipated to begin in May of 2023 involving the removal of rumble strips followed by bridge work.  Mainline roadway work is anticipated to start in August of 2023.  No ramp closures are anticipated until late Summer or early Fall of 2023. Additional press releases will be issued as work progresses.

This project will improve traffic and roadside safety along this section of interstate highway with roadway and bridge improvements.  Roadway improvements include crack sealing select portions of I-95 within the project limits, full depth pavement reconstruction in a select portion of I-95 mainline, mill and overlay on select portions of I-95 mainline, and mill and overlay of the interchange ramps.  Roadside safety elements will be brought to current standards throughout the project limits.

Bridge improvements include reconstructing end blocks to accept MASH compliant guiderail attachments, installing safety fencing, and replacement of asphaltic plug joints (excluding those over regulated sources).  Additionally, the scenic overlook along I-95 northbound, east of Interchange 89, will be improved with new fencing and sidewalks. This project will upgrade/replace the highway illumination along I-95 at Interchange 89 and 90 and the replace and/or upgrade the guide rail systems including anchorages, and impact attenuators.

DOT Project No. 0058-0340 was awarded to American Industries, Inc. at a cost of $38,250,000.00 on January 21, 2023 and is scheduled to be completed on November 30, 2024.  This project is administered by the Office of Construction, District 2 in Norwich, CT.
