CTDOT Completes Accelerated Bridge Replacement Project in Waterford

The Connecticut Department of Transportation has completed another Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) project, replacing the north- and southbound I-95 bridges over Oil Mill Road in Waterbury. The ABC process entails building a bridge section adjacent to its final location and then moved into place quickly once constructed – usually one weekend or one overnight period.

In this case, there were four “slides,” where one half of each of the two bridges was slid into place to accelerate construction and minimize impacts and inconveniences to the traveling public.

The bridges have been installed, but there is still some additional work to do which will require intermittent nighttime lane closures through the rest of the month of October. Some final work will also be completed in the spring.

“I want to congratulate the team on another successful ABC project,” said CTDOT Commissioner James P. Redeker. “This is one of several ABC projects we’ve completed over the last few years, including those on I-84 in Southington, Route 8 in Bridgeport and Route 57 in Weston.”
