CT Dept. of Labor Celebrates National Apprenticeship Week 2023
(Wethersfield, CT) – Connecticut Department of Labor (CTDOL), in partnership with the U.S. Department of Labor, recognizes National Apprenticeship Week November 13-19, 2023. CTDOL is the state’s only federally authorized entity for Registered Apprenticeship Programs and currently works with more than 1,700 businesses that employ approximately 6,400 Registered Apprentices. All Apprenticeships and Registered Apprenticeships in Connecticut must be designated by CTDOL and meet career, training, and education requirements as set forth in state law.
CTDOL Commissioner Danté Bartolomeo said, “Registered Apprenticeships are an important part of Connecticut’s overall workforce development strategy. These are good jobs with good salaries, and the Registered Apprenticeship Program provides unparalleled opportunity for career mastery. I want to thank Acting Secretary Su, Governor Lamont, and all of Connecticut’s Registered Apprenticeship partners for their commitment to a strong, diverse workforce that’s ready to compete in the global economy.”
Governor Ned Lamont said, “Apprenticeship programs are a vital part of our employment make-up and an important resource to connect workers with in-demand, stable, good paying jobs. These programs keep our economy growing and build the high-skilled workforce that businesses need to expand.”
Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su said in a press release, “National Apprenticeship Week recognizes the Biden-Harris administration’s historic investments in Registered Apprenticeships and their vital importance to our nation’s workforce infrastructure. This week, we commend our partners — in industry associations, labor organizations, education and academia, workforce development, community-based organizations and in federal, state, and local governments — for committing to make the long-term investments needed to ensure a pipeline of talent for the good-paying, quality jobs being created across the nation.”
Registered Apprenticeship Programs are available in industries throughout Connecticut including healthcare and patient care; building and construction; manufacturing; software development; licensed trades; and others. Through a partnership with the Connecticut State Department of Education, Registered Apprenticeships in education are currently under development as well. Registered Apprentices master skills within 1-4 years through a combination of academics and on the job training. Upon program completion, Registered Apprentices are credentialed and ready to take any licensing exams required by their trade.
CTDOL Director of the Office of Apprenticeship Training Todd Berch said, “Registered Apprentices earn while they learn—they are on the job even when they are in the classroom, and that gives them both hands on and theoretical knowledge of their craft. Registered Apprenticeships provide an incredible opportunity for students breaking into careers and for employers who are training the workforce for the jobs they have available now and in the future.”
Thousands of companies across Connecticut have benefited from customized Registered Apprenticeship Programs. These programs increase workforce recruitment and proficiency, help employers transfer occupational skills to a new generation of workers, and promote succession planning. Some manufacturing employers may be eligible for wage subsidies through the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology. Companies must have CTDOL-verified and designated Registered Apprenticeships to receive up to $7,500 annually for up to seven eligible positions.
