Correctional Counselor 
Re-Entry Services Counselors

Hours: 36.25 Hours per week, Monday-Friday (may require some evening hours)
Shift: 1st Shift 
Counselor:            $51,597.00 - $67,371.00
Counselor Trainee: $40,528.00 - $53,392.00

Eligibility Requirement: Candidates applying at the level of Correctional Counselor must be on the certified exam list generated by the Department of Administrative Services. Candidates applying at the level of Counselor Trainee must possess a Bachelor's or Master's degree in counseling, psychology, sociology, criminal justice, law enforcement or social and/or human services.
Minimum Qualifications:
These newly established counseling positions will be responsible for coordinating re-entry services to offenders in an assigned facility. Considerable knowledge of counseling and interviewing techniques, considerable knowledge of individual and social factors relating to personal adjustment; considerable knowledge of community resources; considerable knowledge of current correctional practices including inmate classification systems and parole process; knowledge of methods of casework supervision; knowledge of recovery and/or relapse prevention and group techniques; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and case histories; ability to organize time, set priorities and manage workload, performs related duties as required.
General Experience:
Candidates applying at the level of Correctional Counselor must possess six (6) years of experience in parole, probation, social casework or counseling. One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a correctional counseling, parole or probation program. Candidates applying at the level of Counselor Trainee must have knowledge of individual and group behavior; knowledge of reciprocal relationship between individuals and their social, economic and cultural environment; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to relate to different cultural and economic backgrounds; ability to organize time, set priorities and manage workload..
Preferred Experience: Experience and familiarity with current correctional practices regarding re-entry and classification. Experience or familiarity dealing with the needs of pre-release offenders. Experience or familiarity with preparing discharge plans for inmates. Knowledge of community resources. Experience with facilitating groups or running programs. Experience with report writing.
