Position Title:
Correctional Counselor
Open To: Department of Correction Employees Only (Lateral Transfers)
Community Release Unit-Walker Drive, Enfield
Hours: 36.25, Monday - Friday
$56,109 - $73,262 Annually
Closing Date: March 10, 2015
Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have considerable knowledge of counseling and interviewing techniques, considerable knowledge of individual and social factors relating to personal adjustment; considerable knowledge of community resources; considerable knowledge of current correctional practices including inmate classification systems and parole process; knowledge of methods of casework supervision; knowledge of recovery and/or relapse prevention and group techniques; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare clear and concise reports and case histories; ability to organize time, set priorities and manage workload, performs related duties as required.
Eligibility Requirement: To apply for this position, you must currently hold the title of Correctional Counselor.  This opportunity is being offered to lateral transfer candidates only.
Note for Position:
This position will be part of the Departments newly created Community Release Unit.  This individual will work in accordance with departmental policy and standards; will determine priorities and unit duties, oversee and review results for accuracy, effective and consistent application of policies and procedures; work collaboratively and acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding Community Release; maintains records and prepare reports and correspondence; may process Administrative Remedies/Inmate Grievances; may provide presentations to various audiences regarding DOC Community Release practices and/or the agency's reentry model to support positive community reintegration; may participate in administrative team meetings; may conduct facility audits for compliance with protocol; may be required to travel; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces; performs related duties as required.
Preferred Experience:
Candidates with the following will be given preference:
  • Currently holds or has held the position of Facility Community Release liaison
  • Extensive knowledge of Community Release eligibility criteria
  • Considerable knowledge of Connecticut General Statutes, DOC Community Release policies and Objective Classification
  • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills as this position will communicate with DOC Facility, Board of Pardons and Paroles, and DOC Parole and Community Services staff
  • Considerable knowledge of individual and social factors contributing to delinquincy and crime
  • Knowledge of substance abuse and current correctional treatment practices
