FY23 Awards - How They Were Calculated
In The Past
Prior Supporting Arts grant awards were set and published in the program’s guidelines. Due to insufficient funds to fully fund grantees at the published amounts, grant awards were reduced. See chart below for FY21 & FY22.

Per FY23 Supporting Arts Guidelines
Grant awards will be proportional to organizational operating expenses and will be calculated based on a combination of operating expenses and available funds. The minimum grant award is $1,000. The maximum grant award will be dependent on available funding and the number of eligible applicants. All eligible applicants will receive funding.
Looking Toward the Future
FY23 marks the first year of a dramatic change to the Supporting Arts program. This change allows the CT Office of the Arts to work toward accomplishing two goals:
-
to implement equity within the grant making process; and
-
to support smaller, grass-root and emerging organizations, which are often led by individuals in the BIPOC community, so that they may grow in capacity.
How Grants Were Calculated
-
applicants reported four (4) years of operating expenses
-
applicants were assigned to a category based on average of operating expenses:
-
Under $100,000
-
$100,000 - $500,000
-
Over $500,000 - $1M
-
Over $1M
-
-
grant funds were allocated to each category relative to the percentage that category was to the full applicant pool:
-
Total number of SAP applicants: 219
-
98 applicants fell within the “Under $100,000” category
-
“Under $100,000” applicants are 45% of the total applicant pool
-
“Under $100,000” category was allocated 45% of the available grant funds
-
-
grant amounts were calculated using a standard control for 4-year average expenses

**FY23 Supporting Arts guidelines established a $1,000 minimum/ $10,000 maximum grant award. The “Under $100,000” category was the only category that required an adjustment to accommodate the minimum/maximum awards. To accomplish this, the “Under $100,000” category was broken into two sub-categories.
