Why is Home Improvement Registration Important to Consumers?

Hiring the right person to work on your most valuable asset is a big responsibility. Aside from the cost of the work and materials, if the job isn't done well, you could find yourself with more problems than before. Each year, more consumers complain to the Department about home improvement issues than anything else.
Fly-by-night operators tarnish the home improvement market, scamming people out of thousands of dollars each year.  Registration of legitimate home improvement contractors, and encouraging consumers only to work with registered contractors, is helping to put the scammers out of business in Connecticut.
By law, all home improvement contractors and home improvement salespersons doing work in Connecticut must be registered with the Department of Consumer Protection. That includes roofers, remodeling contractors, driveway pavers, and anyone who installs fences, flooring or windows, to name just a few.
Hiring a registered contractor is your strongest protection against financial damage or loss on a home improvement job. The state’s Home Improvement Guaranty Fund can provide up to $25,000 in financial restitution per contract, if something goes wrong in a job done by a registered contractor.

Any home improvement worker that you hire should be actively registered with the Department of Consumer Protection.
