Synthetic Cannabis

Historically, a group of compounds originally developed by several medical/pharmacy researchers.

Currently there is no approved medical use for any of these products.

  • Classification: Hallucinogenic, marijuana-like, “ psychoactive designer drugs”

  • Availability:  Leafy plant material commonly sold in brightly colored foil packaging containing from 2 to 12 grams, or small plastic jars.  Sold in convenience stores, head shops and online

  • Observed Behavior: Expected marijuana-like high with negative effects

  • Observed negative effects: Anxiety, nausea, hypertension, severe paranoia, agitation, hallucinations, delusions, dilated pupils, heart palpitations, panic attacks, respiratory issues, heart attack, convulsions

  • Street Names:  
    • K-2
    • Spice
    • Black Mamba
    • Fake Weed
    • Genie
    • Blaze
    • JWH
    • Skunk

  • Street Pricing: Can be from a few dollars to twenty dollars per unit package

  • Drug Schedule: The synthetic cannabinmimetic compounds are Schedule I in Connecticut effective April 24, 2012
    • 21a-243-7(f) Unless specifically excepted or unless listed in another schedule, any material, compound, mixture or preparation which contains any quantity of a substance having a psychotropic response primarily by agonist activity at cannabinoid-specific receptors affecting the central nervous system. Specific compounds include, but are not limited to:    
      • 1-pentyl-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole (JWH-018)
      • 1-butyl-3-(1-naphtholy)indole (JWH-073)
      • 1-[2-(4-morpholynyl)ethyl]-3-(1-naphthoyl)indole (JWH-200)
      • 5-(1,1-dimethyloctyl)-2-[(1R,3S)-3-hydroxycyclohexyl]-phenol (CP-47497)
      • 5-(1,1-dimethylheptyl)-2-(1R,3S)-3-hydroxycyclohexyl]-phenol(cannabicyclohexanol CP-47,497 C* homologue). 
  • Charges: These drugs are  classified as Cannabinmimetic Agents in the Designer Drug-Hallucinogen Drug Type

    • Sale - Any quantity regardless of drug dependency is 21a-277(a)

    • Sale - Any quantity for a not drug dependent person is 21a-278(b)

    • Possession - Any quantity regardless of drug dependency 21a-279(b)
